Landscape, memory and repetition
Kent’s recorded landscape spans prehistoric sites, Roman routes, medieval religious houses, castles, coastal defences, dockyards and later military works. Historic England’s county record shows listed places across every major period, while the coast and old cross-county routes have continually moved soldiers, pilgrims, traders and travellers through the same ground.
That depth of history gives folklore somewhere to gather. A repeated account may tell us something important about local memory even when it cannot establish that a supernatural event occurred. The directory therefore separates KASE fieldwork, documented reports and folklore instead of blending them into one claim.

North Kent & Medway
Medway’s military and maritime history gives this part of Kent a distinctive concentration of forts, tunnels and defensive landscapes. Fort Horsted and Slough Fort sit within that wider story; Blue Bell Hill represents a different tradition, where a modern road legend became attached to a busy strategic route.

East Kent & the coast
Dover’s fortifications and Reculver’s towers are visible expressions of a coast shaped by defence, navigation, erosion and seafaring. East Kent’s stories often borrow that atmosphere, but a dramatic setting is not evidence by itself: each record identifies what is sourced, what is reported and what remains folklore.

West Kent & the Weald
In the Weald, reported hauntings are often attached to villages, manor houses, inns and routes rather than one isolated structure. Pluckley is treated as one area record—including its Black Horse material—so the map does not pretend a village-wide body of folklore belongs to a single arbitrary pin.
Visitor information
The directory describes places; it does not grant access to them. Check current conditions with the venue or land manager before every visit.
Kent’s roads can become busy. Check current travel information, opening times and the final safe access point before leaving. Build in time for delays and never improvise parking at a roadside location.
Do not stop on a carriageway, hard shoulder, verge or unsafe lay-by to investigate a road legend. Blue Bell Hill and similar records are documentary entries, not invitations to recreate an account.
Public opening does not automatically permit filming, night access or an investigation. Obtain the owner or operator’s explicit permission and follow staff instructions, closing times and restricted-area notices.
Use marked paths, respect gates, wildlife and residents, and follow local warnings. At coastal locations check weather, tide and cliff conditions through current official services.
Take nothing, leave nothing and do not mark, move or damage historic fabric. Keep noise and light controlled, particularly near homes, wildlife and places of worship.
Use a written plan, work within the permission granted and record environmental explanations alongside unusual observations. Do not pressure vulnerable people or present a personal experience as established fact.
